Grab a Bud Light

Alcohol advertisements often use images of girls or men to lure their customers into buying their products. As most people say, “Sex sells,” which it does indeed. Lets not lie though, sex is in fact often always on people’s mind, of course more on guys than girls, but it is the root of how sellers make their money. Take this ad for instance; although the product being sold is beer, an attractive young woman takes up majority of the ad. However, if Budweiser is what is being sold why isn’t that being showcased more? Well the answer is sex! The women being a large portion of the ad will most likely bring men and women to look at the advertisement and give it the attention that producers of Budweiser want.

Along with sex being used as a device to persuade customers, Budweiser also uses the concept of needing to achieve something as a method of making a bottle of Budweiser that much more desirable. The headline on the ad says Live the Good Life with Bud Light, which can suggest that once a person has a Bud light in their hand they are achieving a certain goal. In this situation this goal could possibly be being able to relax, have a female companion, and enjoying a Bud light at the same time. It allows customers to feel as though they are better than someone else because they have a drink and girl at their sides while another individual does not. Its allowing consumers to feel as though once their purchase this product they can get a sense of getting something accomplished and being proud of it.

Lastly this ad uses the appeal of allowing consumers to want to escape. It portrays this mood that by buying a Budweiser he or she can escape and live the good life. By doing this customers are more willing to buy this beer because every person needs to get away. It is obvious that with life come many stresses and responsibilities, such as being in school, having a job, or taking care of one’s life. Therefore, it would be nice to just get away from everything and not have to worry. This ad basically is telling consumers that by drinking a Bud Light they can get away from it all and just enjoy some time to themselves that can bring peace, happiness, or whatever it is the customer may desire.

  1. Beer ads are every where. You see them on television, billboards, magazines, and on the internet. They all want to achieve the same objective. They want us to buy the beer for several reasons. I do agree with you because most beer ads have a woman advertising their product. Even when there are guys in the ad they always have a woman. When the woman is shown she is always dressed very nicely or attractive way. Most of these beers ads tell you do drink this beer and your wishes will come true. This could be sex, woman, happiness, popularity or anything else. They are trying to tell us that if we do not buy their product we will not be happy. What a beer company wants is for us to buy their beer no mater how stupid or start their ad is. That is why they always have a sexy lady in the ad trying to persuade us to buy it. Sex buys everything because it what a lot of guys and girl want when they are having a good time.

  2. I definitely agree with the sex sells argument. Advertizers are constantly exploiting sex as a means to promote their product. Sexy women or shirtless men are gonna catch people's eyes when their flipping through a magazine or watching TV. I think beer ads more than any other ads play on a persions neccesity to belong. They tell people that if they have beer, they'll be able to drink it with friends and find a hot lady at a bar. There is a reason they keep using these types of advertisements, it's because they work, and they work very well. They keep advertising, people keep buying. Good job on your blog.

  3. I too wrote about sex and the food industry. I think it is so weird that sex in marketing has gone as far as FOOD! Although I understand how the “marketing game” works I always find myself getting annoyed when a guy comments on how hot the girl is in the beer ad. I feel majority of those ads are digitally enhanced because the girls always seem so plastic. It would be interesting to see how well these companies would do without sex in advertising. I also wonder if guys stay away from certain beers because they don’t think a particular model is as good looking as another.

  4. I also read Alyssa’s blog and this is the same in selling their product. Companies do use women and men to lure customers in to sell their products. This campaign is of course saying that if you are drink a bud light that you are living the good life and nothing else matters. Sex in the marketing world is very popular and it will never change. Men and women are being used as a piece of meat in these advertisements. They are put on these ads and billboards for the way they look and they put their product in and they are done selling their product.

  5. I agree also that sex sells. Beer ads almost always feature a woman. The funniest part of this all is that, of all the girls I know at least, not many actually like beer. The only women I know that actually like beer are the ones who have become accustomed to it since it is undoubtedly cheaper than any sort of hard alcohol. I find it amusing that this whole “sex sells” approach still works. If a man sees an attractive woman somewhere, he is automatically drawn to it. This is especially true in alcohol since it impairs judgment. I can’t wait until alcohol companies find a new way to sell, because it’s all becoming the same.
